Biscuit ~ Quick and filling breakfast recipe !

The thought of making American Biscuits entered my mind while I was watching one of the episodes of Desperate Housewives, where Susan's MIL visits her and takes up the initiative to teach her cooking. Her MIL starts with American Biscuit because she thinks that it is one thing that cannot go wrong and is easy to start with. I wondered if it really was that easy to make.

Next thing I did was search for a recipe and decided to make it the next morning as Jacob would be working from home. That would give me ample time to work with a new recipe as I wouldn't have to pack up lunch while I make breakfast.

Jacob is not a fan of biscuits but I wanted to give it a try atleast once. I must say it was much quicker a process than what I had anticipated and it turned out flaky and delicious as I had dreamt of last night :P. Yeah, I was so obsessed about making them that I did dream about them. Ohh, I must say Jacob ate his stomach full and a little more I guess :) and he liked it so much that he wanted it to be made often. So when we made it the second time, I photographed them to share the recipe with you guys. I guess he would have never known his love for biscuits if I had never given it a try. So why don't you too give it a try and see if you fall in love with it for the first time or may be again(if you are already in love with it :))

Ingredients
  1. 2 1/2 cups of all purpose flour/maida
  2. 2 1/2 tsp of baking powder
  3. 1/2 tsp of salt
  4. 1 tbsp of granulated white sugar
  5. 113 gms of cold unsalted butter
  6. 3/4 cup of milk
  7. 1 large egg
Method

  • Preheat the oven to 400 F/205 C.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the all purpose flour, salt , sugar and baking powder.
  • Cut the block of butter into small cubes and drop it into the bowl.
  • Use your finger tips to cut the butter into the dry ingredients untill they turn out into coarse crumbs.
  • Beat the egg and add it into the bowl. Also pour in the milk. Mix it till they combine together and form a sticky and lumpy dough.
  • Place it on a floured surface and knead it to form a smooth dough.
  • Roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a floured cookie cutter to cut of biscuits out of it and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Brush the top of the biscuits with egg wash.
  • Bake for about 10-15 minutes or untill the surface turns golden brown and a tooth pick inserted comes out clean.
  • Serve it warm with sausage gravy/butter/jam.
Tips

  1. Mix the dough only untill the ingredients come together. The dough should not be over worked with else they might turn hard.
