Namkeen

What do you like more - sweet or salty ? Well for me, I don't really have a sweet tooth and would prefer salty. On a lazy day, I was just looking in for some snack that I could make quickly. I had this namkeen in mind but was not sure if its called the same everywhere. I would definitely update the name, if I ever come across it, in the future. Having failed to figure out the recipe from the internet, I called up my mom to double check if the recipe that I had in mind was okay to continue with.

These namkeens are quick and easy to make. Well, I say that quite often about most of my recipes, don't I ? :). But trust me, with very few ingredients and minimal effort I could make a heap of namkeens :). So I love making these.

Ingredients
  1. 2 cups of all purpose flour
  2. 1 tbsp of ajwain/ carom seeds
  3. 2 tbsp of ghee/butter
  4. Salt to taste
  5. Water
  6. Oil for frying

Method
  • In a bowl, mix the all purpose flour, carom seeds, salt, and ghee so that they get evenly distributed.
  • Add water to it and knead it well. Divide it into 2 inch balls.
  • On a floured surface, roll out the balls of dough using a rolling pin, to a thickness, little more than a chapati/tortilla.
  • With a knife, make parallel cuts of about 1 cms width across the rolled out dough. Then again make cuts diagonally, so as to attain a diamond shape, as you see in the picture below.
  • Heat the oil in a pan.
  • Once the oil gets heated up, maintain the heat on medium. Drop in the namkeens.
  • Fry it, till it turns golden brown and then strain it onto a paper towel to remove excess oil.

Tips
  1. You could use sesame seeds in the dough, if you wish to.
  2. Do not use carom seeds in plenty. Although, carom seeds is one of the main ingredients that determine its taste, excessive use of it can ruin the taste.
  3. I would recommend to use vegetable oil for frying as it provides a greater shelf life to these namkeens when compared to frying them in coconut oil.

Hope you would try these out at home and enjoy having and serving it.
