Ombre cake ~ 3 layers for 3 years !

I have been seeing the pictures of beautiful ombre cakes floating through in Pinterest. I could never control myself drooling over the pictures.

All said, I must admit that I am not a fan of frosting but I love the way the cakes are decorated. When it comes to eating a cake with frosting, I feel a huge sugar rush after having it and don't even ask me about the guilt that grows in me for having had all that cream, butter and sugar that I imagine myself to be inflating like a balloon. So when it comes to frosting a cake at home, I hesitate, because both of us don't prefer frosting and more over I run short of ideas how to decorate it (Honestly...I am bad at frosting).

As we turned 3 together, the three layered ombre cake did sound perfect to celebrate our third wedding anniversary. I quickly ran through few videos of how to do it and burst out the idea to Jacob. Now he came up with an offer of helping me with it.

I too thought it would be a cool way of bonding on the special day, walking down the memory lane - all those chit chatting during the courtship days and learning each others family tree(we have got huge families so it definitely took some time to learn who's who, name etc.), planning of how to figure out some time to have food on our own wedding day :P, etc.

Anyways, we had fun making it together as well as having it.

The recipe includes the combo of our favorites among the cake/frosting recipes that we have tried till now - the sponge cake that I had made for the checkerboard cake and the cream cheese frosting that I had used for the red velvet cupcakes and was liked by both of us. I doubled the amount of ingredients for the vanilla sponge cake and divided the batter into three, to add in the colours accordingly to create 3 layers.

As far as patterns are concerned, I was too lazy to go in for multi coloured layers, so I went with just one colour for frosting. For the frosting pattern, all you need is a piping bag and a spoon. It would be much easier to watch a video of ombre cake designs on youtube rather than me explaining it here :).

  18. Belated wedding anniversary wishes dear friend. The cake looks so sweet, cute and perfectly made to celebrate a lovely day. About the frosting part, I totally agree with you Anu, I too hate to have the frosting, and that's why I always prefer the plain cakes without any frosting. But then sometimes for the sake of appearance, you really feel like decorating your cakes a bit(but I remove the frosting before it goes into my mouth)
