Kappa Vevichathu / Kappa Puzhukku / Tapioca cooked with coconut mix

Which combo, among the two, is your favorite ? Kappa and Meen curry ( fish curry ) or Kappa and Beef curry ? Either ways , they taste heavenly but I like the combo with fish, however Jacob is a fan of the kappa - beef curry combo. So whenever we make it we make beef curry to go with it but fish curry would also be in stock so that I could also enjoy it my way. And ya, a glass of black coffee is a must to pair with it.

The time I start preparing it, the question keeps pouring in every other minute inquiring if it's been done . He he.... So when it's all ready , without wasting another minute we start digging into it. I wonder , when Jordan grows up , which combo is he gonna pick. I wish he picks up my side : P , so we both could talk Jacob onto our side too.

Anyways , all said , you should try it , if you have not already. And come back and let me know which combo is your favorite .

Ingredients
  1. 2 lbs of Kappa/Tapioca/Yucca root - skin removed and chopped into small cubes
  2. 4-5 pearl onions/shallots, sliced
  3. 2-3 green chilly, chopped
  4. 1 cup of shredded coconut
  5. 2 cloves of garlic crushed
  6. 1 tsp of Turmeric powder
  7. 1 strand of curry leaves
  8. Salt to taste

Method
  • In a large pressure cooker, take the chopped tapioca. Add water to it, so that the tapioca is fully immersed in water and the level of the water is an inch above that of tapioca. Place it on the stove and cook it untill the first whistle goes off. Switch off the stove and let it stand for 5 mins. Release the pressure and drain away the water from the cooked tapioca. This is an easy method of cooking tapioca, however the cook time would vary depending on the tapioca. Non pressure cooked method is time consuming but reliable as you get to check if tapioca is done while cooking it. For the non pressure cooker method, cook it in a large vessel filled with water. Once the water starts boiling, simmer it to medium heat and continue cooking untill done. Drain the excess water.
  • Meanwhile, grind the ingredients 2-6. Keep it aside. Once the tapioca is cooked and the water has been drained off, drop the ground mixture, salt and curry leaves into the cooked tapioca . Cover and cook for 5 minutes. Remove it from the heat and with a ladle, mix all the ingredients well.
  • Serve it hot with Beef Curry or Chicken Curry or Meen Curry or Coconut Chutney or Kadukku Manga Achar.

Tips
  1. Ensure that you add excess water while you cook the tapioca and also drain it off once the tapioca is cooked.
  2. You could keep the left over tapioca in the refrigerator and have it in a day or two having seasoned it. For seasoning, in a skillet, take little oil, drop in some mustard seeds. Once the mustard seeds pop, add some sliced shallots, curry leaves and red chilly. Saute it. Add the left over tapioca and mix it well. Remove it from the heat and and serve hot.
